Timing it right

When can my teen start drivers ed?

Your teen can start drivers ed at 15. There is a real reason not to wait: being enrolled lets them get an instruction permit at 15, while teens who skip drivers ed have to wait until 15 and a half. Here is how to time it.

The age rule

Fifteen is the magic number. Your teen must be at least 15 by the first day of class to enroll. That early start is not just about getting going sooner. Enrollment is what lets a 15 year old apply for a permit, a full six months before non-enrolled teens can.

Why earlier is better

The permit is where real practice happens, and the more practice before the license, the safer and more confident the driver. Starting at 15 means your teen can be logging supervised hours during the summer, when there is time, instead of cramming them in around junior-year homework. It also spreads the whole process out so nothing feels rushed.

Working around school and summer

WMST runs classes through the school year and over the summer. Summer sessions are popular because the schedule is open, so they fill early. If your teen plays a fall sport or has a packed spring, a summer class is often the easiest fit. Check current dates on the locations page or call to plan around your year.

One more reason not to wait: Washington is phasing in a drivers ed requirement for new drivers under 22, starting in 2027. Teens are already covered, but the direction is clear: the state values the training.

Common questions

What is the youngest age to start drivers ed?

Fifteen. Your teen must be at least 15 by the first day of class.

Does starting drivers ed early help?

Yes. Enrolling lets a 15 year old get a permit six months sooner than waiting until 15 and a half, which means more practice time before the license.

When are drivers ed classes offered?

Through the school year and over the summer. Summer sessions fill early because schedules are open, so book ahead.

Is there a deadline to finish?

You have 120 days from the first class to complete the program, with up to three make-up sessions, so there is flexibility built in.
