Washington instruction permit

How to get your learner permit in Washington

You can get a Washington instruction permit at 15 if you are enrolled in drivers ed, or at 15 and a half if you are not. You pass the 40-question knowledge test, bring your ID documents, get a parent to sign if you are under 18, and pay the fee. Here is exactly how it works.

When you can apply

Two ages matter. If you are enrolled in a drivers education course, you can apply at 15. If you are not taking drivers ed, you have to wait until 15 and a half. That gap is one reason a lot of families start drivers ed early.

What to bring

Plan to show proof of who you are and where you live. Most teens bring a birth certificate or passport, a Social Security number, and something with a current address. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian needs to be there to give permission, usually online at the counter.

Tip: if you are in drivers ed, you may not need to pass the knowledge test before applying. WMST adds your waiver to the DOL once we have your WDL number, which lets you get the permit without having taken the DOL knowledge exam first. We walk you through this in the first class.

The knowledge test

The permit knowledge test is 40 questions, and you need 32 right, which is 80 percent. It covers signs, signals, right of way, and the rules in the Washington driver guide. If you want the full rundown, see our knowledge test guide.

What the permit lets you do

A permit is not a license. You can only drive with a licensed driver who has at least 5 years of experience in the front passenger seat, and during drivers ed, with your instructor. The permit lasts one year, which is your window to log practice hours and get ready to test.

Common questions

Do I need a permit before my first drivers ed class?

No. You can start the classroom without a permit, but you will need one before you begin any behind-the-wheel driving lessons.

How much does the permit cost?

The knowledge test is $25 per attempt, and there is a separate permit application fee at the DOL. Confirm the current amounts with the Department of Licensing, since fees change.

How long is the permit good for?

One year. If you need more time, you can renew it. Most people test for their license well within that window.

Can my parent let me drive without a licensed adult?

No. A permit holder must always have a licensed driver with at least 5 years of experience in the front passenger seat. There are no exceptions for short trips.
