What the car must have
Before you drive, the examiner does a quick safety check. The car needs working brake lights, turn signals, a horn, seatbelts for the examiner and you, good tires, and a windshield clear enough to see through. It also needs current registration and proof of insurance. If something fails, the test is rescheduled.
What gets a car rejected
- A burnt-out brake light or signal.
- A check-engine or warning light that suggests a safety issue.
- Expired tabs or no proof of insurance.
- A cracked windshield in the driver line of sight.
- Doors that do not open from the outside, or a broken seatbelt.
These are common and easy to miss. Walk around the car the day before and check each one.
The case for testing in the training car
WMST students can test in the same dual-control car they trained in, which removes the whole question. It is a known, maintained car, set up for the test, and you already know how it brakes and steers. If you do test in your own car, just make sure it passes the checklist above so test day is not wasted. More on what to bring is in our test-day guide.
