Why this question is so hard to answer
Worth saying plainly: the DOL has no dedicated page explaining what happens to a lapsed motorcycle endorsement. There is no published grace period and no stated threshold at which retesting kicks in. That is why searching this produces forum threads and contradictions.
What we can do is tell you what the DOL does publish, and be honest about where the certainty runs out.
The endorsement is attached to the license
A motorcycle endorsement is not a separate credential with its own expiry. It sits on your driver license and renews on the same six-year or eight-year cycle.
The DOL's published renewal fees reflect that. Renewing a license that carries a motorcycle endorsement costs more than renewing one without: $91 for six years or $121 for eight for a standard license, against $61 and $81 without the endorsement. There is also a separate "renew motorcycle endorsement" line at $85 for six years or $113 for eight.
If you renew on time, the endorsement carries forward and nobody asks you to ride a figure-eight.
Where retesting appears
Two situations the DOL does document:
- An expired license extension. Where a license carrying a motorcycle endorsement was extended and that extension expires, the DOL states you must reapply in person, take any necessary tests, and pay the fees.
- A surrendered endorsement. There is a grace period, and it is the most useful thing on this page. WAC 308-109-060 provides that if an endorsement is surrendered, you have 365 days to reinstate it without retesting. Miss that window and you must pass all required tests again.
Note the phrase "any necessary tests" in the first case. That is discretionary language, which is precisely why riders get different answers from different offices.
What to do about it
The practical path, in order:
- Check your actual license rather than your memory. Endorsement code L is the motorcycle endorsement; code O is the instruction permit. There will also be a restriction indicating two-wheel, three-wheel, or both.
- Call the DOL and ask about your specific record. Because the published rules leave room for judgement, the only reliable answer is the one attached to your file. The public line is 360-902-3900.

The part nobody wants to hear
If your endorsement lapsed because you stopped riding for a decade, the retest question is not the real question. The real question is whether your riding is still where it was.
Returning riders are a recognised risk group. The mental model comes back quickly and feels complete, while the physical inputs, emergency braking, low-speed balance, and cornering commitment, come back much more slowly. That mismatch, confidence outrunning capability, is what puts returning riders down.
Machines have also moved on. If your last bike was carburetted and had no ABS, a modern motorcycle brakes and delivers power quite differently.
An intermediate or refresher course is a sensible answer whether or not the DOL makes you retest. If it turns out you do have to test, you get both jobs done at once.
