The course waiver

Skip the DOL test: how the course waiver works

Finish an approved motorcycle safety course in Washington and you are exempt from the DOL written and riding tests. You learn and test on a closed range, then take the completion certificate to the DOL for your endorsement. Here is exactly how it works.

What the waiver means

The state lets approved schools test riders as part of their courses. When you pass an approved course, that result stands in for the DOL knowledge and skills tests, so you do not retake them at a licensing office. WMST is an approved school, so our course completion does the job.

Why the course route is better anyway

This is not just a shortcut, it is the safer way to learn. You ride a provided bike on a closed range with no traffic, with instructors right there, and you build the core skills, friction zone control, braking, cornering, swerving, in a place where a mistake costs nothing. By the time you test, you have done the maneuvers many times. Self-teaching on the street and testing cold at the DOL is the harder, riskier path.

Bonus: insurers often discount premiums for riders who complete an approved safety course. Worth asking your provider.

Turning the certificate into an endorsement

After you pass, you receive a completion card. You take that to the DOL, pay the endorsement fee, and the endorsement is added to your license. That is the last step. Pick your course on the courses page or use the course guide if you are not sure which level fits.

Common questions

Does a motorcycle course waive the DOL test in Washington?

Yes. Completing an approved motorcycle safety course exempts you from the DOL written and riding tests. WMST is an approved school, so our course completion counts.

Do I still go to the DOL?

Yes, for the final step. You take your course completion card to the DOL, pay the endorsement fee, and they add the endorsement to your license.

Why take a course instead of the DOL test?

You learn on a closed range with provided bikes and instructors, build skills safely, and test there. It is safer and better preparation than self-teaching and testing cold.

Does the course lower insurance?

Often, yes. Many insurers discount premiums for riders who complete an approved safety course. Ask your provider.
