Learning to drive as an adult, where to start

Learning to drive later than your friends is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Start with an instruction permit, then take private lessons in a dual-control car to build the basics calmly. Most adults are test-ready in a handful of focused hours. Here is the path.

First, the permit

Even as an adult, you start with an instruction permit, which means passing the knowledge test. From there you can legally practice with a licensed driver who has at least 5 years of experience, or an instructor. If the written test feels rusty, our knowledge test guide gets you ready.

Why private lessons beat winging it

A lot of adults try to learn from a partner or friend, and it strains the relationship and skips the fundamentals. A certified instructor in a dual-control car can brake from their side, so there is no real danger while you learn, and there is zero judgment. The lessons are built around exactly where you are, whether that is your first time behind a wheel or knocking the rust off.

No audience, no pressure: private lessons are one-on-one. It is just you, the instructor, and the road, which is why nervous adults relax quickly.

How long it takes

It depends on your starting point. A complete beginner might want the 9-hour package that takes you from never having driven to taking the skills test. Someone who has driven a little often needs only a few hours of polish. WMST adult lessons start at $75 an hour, and you can add the skills test to a package so the whole thing is handled.
